Dhaka, May 26: Reigning champions Dhaka Abahani Ltd. edged past Brothers Union 2-1 in the third quarterfinal of the Walton Federation Cup 2017 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Friday evening.
Abahani took the lead in the in the 43rd minute with forward Nabib Newaz Jibon breaking the deadlock with a cool finish. Carrying a Sohel Rana cross from the left flank, Jibon deceived his marker with a speedy move before tapping the ball into the near post (1-0).
The Sky Blues extended the lead in the 79th minute off an own goal of Brothers defender Akramuzzaman Liton who sent the ball into his own net trying to clear a shot of Rubel Mia (2-0).
Siyo Zunapio pulled one back for the Old Dhaka outfit in the injury time when the Congolese forward’s curved free-kick from just outside the box curved into the left hand post of Abahani goalie Sohel (2-1).
Abahani will face Sheikh Jamal in the second semi-final on June 3.
