Dhaka: A momentous event unfolded for the Bangladeshi football scenery as Mirona Khatun, a former national Women’s team player, became the first woman to head a men’s football team.
The Navy athlete Mirona Khatun was appointed the coach of Dhaka City FC as the previously appointed regular coach SM Abu Noman Nannu did not have the prerequisite AFC “B” grade coaching license required in Bangladesh Championship laws.
Mirona achieved her B Licence under the AFC Coaching Courses programme initiated by the BFF. BFF President Kazi Salahuddin took the initiative to support coaches, in particular, female coaches, who face numerous hurdles otherwise. Her achievement of this qualification was born out of the BFF strategic Football plan.
The club seized the opportunity to create history in Bangladesh football by appointing her the Head coach, thus taking a momentous step forward in Bangladesh Football. Dhaka FC officially signed a deal with her on December 24 last year.
On a short interview the newly elected coach showed her ecstasy and enthusiasm along with her determination to be the best coach she can be.
‘When Shaon sir first told me that I was to be the head coach for the club after just getting my coaching license, I was really happy.’ was the enthusiastic reply of Mirona Khatun when being asked about her initial feeling on being appointed as a coach.
She expressed her gratitude to the people who have helped her come so long way in such a short time. However, she was the perfect picture of determination and professionalism saying that even though there will be challenges along the way, she believes that with the help of the people and the players of her team she can easily overcome any hurdle that comes in her way.
She mentions the positivity surrounding her in the team saying, “The staff and my team fully accept me as a coach and they have been nothing but helpful and positive in supporting me.” She says she deems herself as a coach first in her professional life and believes that she can be just as effective as anyone else as a coach. She says she along with her staff has a plan to make the team perform as best as possible in the professional space. She is hopeful for the future of the team and believes change within the team for the better is on the way soon.
