AFC Cup: Abahani hold onto top spot after 2-2 draw with Minerva

Dhaka: Bangladesh league champions Abahani Limited came from behind twice against Indian club Minerva Punjab to secure a point in the group stage battle of AFC Cup 2019 at Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka. Visitors Minerva took the lead at the 16th minute of the play when their Syrian recruit and captain Al Amna sent Makan Winkle’s cross past the goal-line. 4 minutes later, Nabib Nawaz Jibon came to the rescue for the hosts. He fired a Cameron Belfort cross past Minerva Goal keeper Vaskas Roy to bring Abahani back on the level, 1-1. When both the teams were heading towards half time being level, Minerva forward Shreyas stroke and bring the visitors back in front at the 42nd minute. But the hosts took just six minutes to come from behind. At the 48th minute of the match, Abahani got a free-kick at the edge of the box. Defender Wali Faisal’s effort hit the post but in rebound Sunday Cizoba struck firmly to secure a point for Mario Lemos’ men. The draw kept the hosts 2 points clear at the top of group E of the tournament.
