JFA U-14 Women’s Championship ends with much promise

Dhaka, December 6: Mymensingh won the national U-14 women’s championship for the third straight time this year in style.

The district from central north of Bangladesh yet again took the title with almost the entire team from the already famous Kalashindur village, which has already produced some of the sensations women’s football. On the other hand Thakurgaon was powered by the talents of Rangatungi village aspiring for their first title.

The exciting final had a scoreline of 3-0 on November 10 for Mymensingh but not without promises of yet another powerhouse emerging from the far north of Thakurgaon’s deep interior.

The matches of the tournament were showcased around six venues across the country — Lakshmipur, Gaibandha, Rajbari, Jessore, Rajshahi and Sherpur.

The preliminary round of the tournament which ended in 25th August saw 6 teams emerging as zonal champions. Those 6 teams and 2 best runners-up teams were part of the final round which started on November 2 and the matches were held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. These included Thakurgaon, Rajshahi, Comilla, Rajbari, Satkhira, Mymensingh, Tangail and Manikganj.

On their way to the final, Thakurgaon defeated Tangail in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. On the other hand Mymensingh booked their way by clinching a dominating victory over Rajshahi with 4-0.

Mymensingh arrived at the final as the favourites while Thakurgaon pegged their hopes on the talents of Rangatungi village with all the promises of a giant killer.

On the noon of that Friday the nation saw two teams fight for the ultimate glory with Mymensingh becoming the champions. After a quick brace from Rozina Akter in 5th and 11th minute, Samsunnahar scored the third goal for the Mymensingh in the 35th minute but were held goalless for the rest of the match.

The champions got a prize money of Tk 50,000, medals and a golden trophy while the runners-up Thakurgaon received Tk 25,000, medals and a silver trophy. The tournament also announced the Golden Boot, Most Valuable Player, Most Promising Player, Best Goalkeeper and the Best Regional Venue.

This tournament saw some promising talents emerge with players like Rozina Akter who won the golden boot with 14 goals in the tournament. Most Promising Player went to Niti of Tangail, the Most Valuable Player went to Samsunnahar and the Best Goalkeeper went to Sagorika, all budding talents who are sure to make it big in future not just for themselves but for Bangladesh as well. But it will be a few years yet before any of these young girls don the national red and green and vindicate their fans.
