FIFA, AFC pre-qualifiers: National team preparing for Laos battle

Dhaka: Bangladesh national team will face Laos in Round 1 of the Preliminary Joint Qualification for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023. In this phase, Bangladesh and Laos will face each other in a two-legged tie. The first leg will be held in Laos capital Vientiane on June 6 while the second leg is scheduled to be held in Dhaka on June 11. The Red and Greens will go through to the final qualifying round of the World Cup if they can beat Laos in this two-legged battle. Besides, they will also get the ticket to play the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Football Federation has organized two friendly matches against two Thai Premier League Clubs in their home grounds ahead of the pre-qualifiers. Bangladesh team will leave Dhaka for Thailand on May 24 while the matches are scheduled to be held on May 28 and June 1. On May 28, Bangladesh will play against Air Force United FC before squaring off against BG Pathum United FC on June 1. The Bangladesh national team played their last international match against Cambodia on March 9 when they defeated their East Asian opponents 1-0. After that, most of the national team players visited Bahrain to take part in the qualifying round of AFC U23 tournament and played some quality football there. They even won the final group match against Sri Lanka 2-0. However, the young team lost two other matches by the smallest of margins against Palestine and hosts Bahrain, who were far ahead of Bangladesh in FIFA rankings. Country’s football lovers have high hopes that the national team will win the tie against Laos and enter the qualifying rounds of two of the most prestigious tournaments in the world.
